Estimated Mass Balances of Perfluorinated Chemicals in Tokyo Bay

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Introduction Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) have been used widely as surfactants, lubricants, paper and textile coatings, polishes, food packaging, and fire-retarding foams over the past fifty years. Some of these chemicals, such as perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), are persistent in the environment and have been found in wild animal samples around the world 1, . Due to the fact that PFCs have quite different chemical properties compared with conventional POPs, their environmental behavior and exposure pathway to human and wildlife need to be clarified. In this study, PFOS and PFOA were monitored in the seawater and sediment from Tokyo Bay and in water of six major rivers that run into the bay. Then, their mass balances and behaviors in the bay were investigated.

Time trends of perfluorinated compounds from the sediment core of Tokyo Bay, Japan (1950s-2004).

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) were detected in sediment core samples collected in Tokyo Bay to reveal their time trends. The core sample deposited during 1950s-2004 was divided into two- to three-year intervals and the concentrations of 24 types of PFCs were determined. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) decreased gradually from the early 1990s and its precursor decreased rapidly in the late 19...

Trend and Sources of Dioxin Pollution in Tokyo Bay, Estimated Based on the Statistical Analyses of Congener Specific Data

On the basis of the congener-specific analysis of dioxins in a dated sediment core, surface sediment, and soil samples, the sources and mass balance of dioxins in Tokyo Bay basin, Japan, were estimated. The dioxins in the sediment core showed that their deposition in the bay increased rapidly during the 1960s, peaked in the early 1970s and then decreased gradually. Principal component analysis ...

Mass Balance of Dioxins in Tokyo Bay and Kasumigaura Lake Basins in Japan

Introduction A number of severe soil and air pollution cases around municipal and industrial waste incinerators have recently been found in Japan. It is tme that the amount of waste incinerated in Japan is very high compared with other countries; however, it must be clarified whether the incinerators are the sole cause ofthe present dioxin pollution problem. In this study, the mass balance of d...

Novel Source Apportionment Method Based on Gis Receptor Model for Aquatic Perfluorinated Compound (pfc) Pollution -a Case Study in the Basin of Tokyo Bay, Japan-

Introduction Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been detected from various environmental matrices even in Arctic, and known to be ubiquitous pollutants. Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) and fluorooctane sulfonamidoethanol (FOSE), which can be degraded to perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), respectively, spread to all over the globe through atmosphere and are consider...

A survey of perfluorooctane sulfonate and related perfluorinated organic compounds in water, fish, birds, and humans from Japan.

Occurrence of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the tissues of humans and wildlife is well documented. In this study, concentrations and distribution of PFOS, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHS), and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) were determined in samples of surface water, fish and bird blood and livers, and human blood collected in Japan. Notable concentrations of PFOS were found in surface...
